The Zonta Club of Yakima has one major fundraiser each year to raise funds for local and international service projects. That fundraiser is called “Murder at the Center”. This annual event takes place the first Saturday in March of every year at the Yakima Convention Center.

The evening event features dinner, silent and live auction, raffle, and a live play. The evening starts with doors opening at 5:30 PM for previewing and bidding on silent auction items throughout the room. Dinner is usually served at 7:00 pm. Dinner is always a magnificent meal, catered by M&M Catering, complete with wine and dessert. There is a live auction after dinner, the results of the raffle items are announced and the play usually begins around 8:00 and lasts until 9:30.

Murder Mystery Play

The 2007, 2008 and 2009 plays were written by Terry Sexton, a comedy writer with writing credits for Laugh In and the Carol Burnett Show. Previous to that the play had been written by Larry Cearlock with early plays written by Esther Shrader (a former Zonta member). Actors are local talented thespians.

One of the best parts of the play is the opportunity given to each table of guests to try to “solve” the murder after the play is finished. There is a short question and answer period where members of the audience can ask questions of the cast prior to having each table try to guess “WHO DUNNIT”! For the past 22 years, this question and answer period has had some of the most creative and entertaining dialogue exchanges in the entire evening. The guests at each table are then asked to fill out their table's solution sheet with their best guess on who committed the murder, how they did it, and why they did it. Prizes are awarded to the winning table!

Tickets

Seating is limited to 500 and the cost is $50.00 per person. Tables for 10 can be purchased by companies and/or individuals for $500 each.

The deadline to purchase tickets is March 2nd, 2010 !

The success of this fundraising event is due to the fantastic support Zonta receives from the business and civic community. Businesses can use this opportunity to showcase new products, announce new services, etc. by donating particular items or services for the auctions. The ten largest ticket items are auctioned off in an live auction - providing the business even more publicity for their donation and their product/service.
