Guidelines for Local Service Grants

Eligible Projects

Programs funded by the Yakima Valley Zonta Club are selected to meet specific community needs, with a focus on improving the economic, social and political status of women. If you wish to request funding from the Yakima Valley Zonta Club, you should consider the following important points:

  • Funding approval is not guaranteed. Each request is evaluated by the Zonta Service Committee according to three criteria: compliance with funding guidelines, money available for distribution at the time the request is received, and the number of other requests received at the same time. The Service Committee refers recommended projects to the Board and the full membership for approval.
  • We prefer to fund programs that benefit groups of people, not individuals. We evaluate all requests in order to choose projects which will best meet the specific needs of our local community and benefit the women of the Yakima Valley.
  • It is our policy not to donate money for construction, administrative costs or salaries. We prefer that Zonta grants be utilized for programs and directly benefit clients.
  • It is our preference to fund organizations only once a year.
  • After organizations have received funds from the Yakima Valley Zonta Club, we require a brief project report to be submitted once it has been completed. We may ask a participant in the program to speak at a Zonta meeting.

Service Committee

Led by a chairperson and a co-chairperson, the service committee recommends the way in which Zonta should allocate the funds raised by this service club. Mindful of the club’s mission to improve the status of women worldwide, the committee suggests how much should be budgeted for international causes and how much should be budgeted for local projects. Once a year it reviews local requests for funding and/or volunteer service hours and makes its recommendations to Zonta’s Board of Directors. Only those recommendations which are approved by the Board are presented to the membership-at-large for its vote.

The committee asks local organizations which receive funding and/or service hours to submit a report when the project is completed. These reports are reviewed by the committee which then may choose to invite a representative of some of the organizations to share the success of a particular project with the membership-at-large at a club meeting.

In the recent past, the club has funded programs for at-risk teen moms, YWCA projects that benefit victims of domestic violence, La Casa Hogar leadership training for immigrant women, the Wig and Hat Boutique at Wellness House, mammograms for uninsured women in the Lower Yakima Valley, the Yakima Valley Coalition for the Homeless Extreme Weather Shelter project, and an annual college scholarship for a Yakima Valley young woman who has demonstrated a commitment to improving the community. This is but a small percentage of the recipients of Zonta’s charitable giving over the fifty-three years, but it is indicative of the club’s focus. A detailed list of giving is given below.
